Fellowship in Brain Injury Medicine

• Hold an MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree.
• Successfully complete an accredited residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation or Neurology.
• Be board-eligible or board-certified in the primary specialty.
• Be eligible for an Illinois medical license.

The Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a one-year ACGME-accredited program offered in collaboration with the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, one of the world's leading rehabilitation hospitals. The fellowship provides comprehensive clinical education in brain injury medicine across the entire continuum of care, beginning with acute management in the Neurocritical Care Intensive Care Unit and progressing through inpatient rehabilitation, day rehabilitation, outpatient clinics, and long-term community reintegration. Fellows receive extensive experience managing patients with traumatic brain injury, concussion, stroke, disorders of consciousness, and other acquired brain injuries. The curriculum includes six months of inpatient brain injury rehabilitation, dedicated rotations in neurocritical care, stroke rehabilitation, brain injury consultation services, outpatient brain injury clinics, day rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation, and protected research time. Fellows also receive advanced procedural training in spasticity management, including neurolytic injections, intramuscular injections, and intrathecal baclofen pump management. The program emphasizes multidisciplinary education through collaboration with neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, therapists, and rehabilitation specialists, while providing opportunities for scholarly research, leadership development, and academic career preparation.
