Overview
The Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship at UC Irvine School of Medicine is a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship that provides advanced training in transfusion medicine, blood banking, cellular therapy, and apheresis. Fellows gain comprehensive experience in the collection, processing, testing, and clinical use of blood and blood components, as well as the diagnosis and management of transfusion reactions, patient blood management, therapeutic apheresis, stem cell collection and processing, immunohematology, coagulation disorders, and transfusion support for complex medical and surgical patients. Training is conducted at UC Irvine Medical Center under the supervision of experienced faculty and includes laboratory management, quality assurance, multidisciplinary consultations, resident teaching, and clinical research opportunities. The fellowship prepares graduates for board certification in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine and careers in academic medicine, hospital transfusion services, and blood centers.

Fellows receive a competitive salary based on their postgraduate year (PGY) according to the UC Irvine Graduate Medical Education compensation structure, along with comprehensive benefits.

Eligibility
- Must have completed a 4-year Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) Residency or a 3-year Clinical Pathology (CP) Residency.
- Must be board-certified or board-eligible in Clinical Pathology (CP), AP/CP, Hematology, or Anesthesiology by the fellowship start date. Applicants from other clinical specialties may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Must possess a California medical license before beginning the fellowship.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or have fulfilled residency/visa requirements before starting the fellowship. J-1 visas are accepted; H-1B visas are not sponsored.

Admission Process:
- Complete the UC Irvine CAP Standardized Fellowship Application with the supplemental form.
- Submit the application electronically (PDF format) to the fellowship coordinators.
- Include the following supporting documents:
- Current Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Personal Statement
- Three Letters of Recommendation
- Dean's Letter (MSPE)
- Medical School Diploma (English translation if applicable)
- Medical School Transcript
- USMLE (Step 1, Step 2 CK, Step 2 CS, Step 3) or COMLEX (Level 1, Level 2-CE, Level 2-PE, Level 3) scores
- ECFMG certificate (if applicable)
- Previous ACGME training certificates (if applicable)
- Applications are reviewed by the fellowship selection committee.
- Shortlisted applicants are invited for interviews by email, which are typically held between August and September.
- The program does not participate in the Unified Approach (fellowship match). Selection is made directly by UC Irvine.
