In final / Provisional year of ANZCA training.

Overseas-trained anaesthesia trainees from a program comparable to ANZCA (ANZCA Regulation 23).

Ability to commit full-time for the 12 months.

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital houses the Anaesthetic Allergy Unit for Western Australia, which serves as the state centre for suspected perioperative anaphylaxis. The fellowship offers a unique opportunity to engage deeply with allergy testing clinics and drug provocation sessions under specialist supervision. Fellows will learn how to triage and assess patients with suspected drug hypersensitivity related to anaesthesia. There is a strong research component: the unit maintains large, long-term databases of perioperative anaphylaxis cases (including a 20+ year database) and runs case-control registries, which fellows can contribute to. Fellows will gain experience in data management (using SPSS, Excel, or even Python), statistical analysis, and academic writing. They will also participate in educational activities — both within the department and at external scientific meetings — helping them build the capability to run or lead similar allergy services in future. Because the fellowship is combined with general anaesthesia work (for the other 6 months), fellows get a balanced exposure to both clinical anaesthesia and specialised allergy work.
