The Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care was traditionally a four-year professional degree preparing students for careers as respiratory therapists, including clinical assessment, pulmonary diagnostics, critical care intervention, and therapeutic management. Graduates were eligible to sit for the National Board for Respiratory Care credentialing examinations and pursue respiratory therapy licensure. However, UTMB updated its curriculum and program structure so that respiratory care education now occurs at the graduate level (Master of Science in Respiratory Therapy) for new students beginning after 2021.
