The Vascular Surgery Residency Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is a highly specialized integrated training pathway designed to prepare future leaders in vascular and endovascular surgery. The residency combines rigorous surgical education, advanced operative training, multidisciplinary patient care, and academic scholarship within one of the nation's leading academic medical centers.
Residents train within the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, which is recognized for excellence in complex vascular reconstruction, minimally invasive endovascular therapies, aortic disease management, peripheral vascular interventions, and limb preservation programs. The division manages a high volume of complex vascular cases, providing residents with extensive operative experience throughout training.
The integrated five-year curriculum is structured to provide a strong surgical foundation during the early years while progressively increasing exposure to vascular surgery. During the first three years, residents complete rotations in general surgery alongside substantial vascular surgery experiences. The final two years are dedicated almost entirely to vascular and endovascular surgery.
Clinical training occurs across multiple NYU Langone Health facilities and affiliated hospitals, exposing residents to diverse patient populations and a broad spectrum of vascular diseases. Residents manage patients with aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, diabetic vascular complications, venous disorders, dialysis access problems, mesenteric ischemia, and vascular trauma.
Operative training includes open vascular reconstructions, carotid endarterectomy, lower-extremity bypass surgery, thoracoabdominal aortic procedures, endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), peripheral angioplasty, stenting procedures, thrombectomy, and advanced hybrid vascular interventions. Residents gain expertise in both traditional and emerging technologies.
The program maintains a strong academic focus with participation in clinical research, outcomes studies, vascular device innovation, quality improvement initiatives, and translational vascular science projects. Residents are encouraged to present at national vascular surgery meetings and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
Educational activities include vascular surgery conferences, morbidity and mortality reviews, journal clubs, multidisciplinary vascular conferences, board preparation sessions, simulation training, and case-based discussions. Residents work closely with nationally recognized vascular surgeons who provide mentorship in both clinical practice and academic development.
Graduates of the residency are eligible for vascular surgery board certification and pursue careers in academic vascular surgery, private practice, hospital-based vascular programs, advanced endovascular therapy centers, and vascular research institutions.
