Overview
- The Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is an advanced subspecialty training program designed for nephrologists seeking expertise in kidney transplantation and transplant medicine. The fellowship is conducted through the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, one of the leading transplant centers in the United States. The program provides intensive clinical exposure to all aspects of kidney transplantation, from pre-transplant evaluation through long-term post-transplant care.
- The Kidney Transplant Program performs approximately 350 kidney transplants annually, providing fellows with exposure to a high-volume transplant service and a broad spectrum of transplant-related conditions. Fellows participate in recipient evaluations, donor assessments, waiting list management, transplant surgeries, inpatient transplant care, and outpatient follow-up clinics.
- Training includes comprehensive management of kidney transplant recipients, including patients receiving combined organ transplants such as kidney–pancreas, liver–kidney, heart–kidney, and lung–kidney transplants. Fellows work closely with transplant surgeons, transplant nephrologists, pathologists, immunologists, pharmacists, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- A major strength of the fellowship is its extensive exposure to transplant immunology. Fellows gain in-depth knowledge of HLA typing, crossmatch testing, donor-recipient compatibility assessment, immunosuppressive medication management, rejection monitoring, and desensitization strategies. Training emphasizes both the scientific and clinical aspects of transplantation.
- The curriculum provides advanced experience in renal allograft pathology and kidney biopsy interpretation. Fellows learn to perform renal allograft biopsies and develop expertise in diagnosing rejection, recurrent disease, infectious complications, and transplant-related pathology. This procedural experience is an important component of transplant nephrology training.
- NYU's transplant program is recognized for innovative approaches to high-risk transplantation, including ABO-incompatible transplantation, HLA-incompatible transplantation, kidney paired donation protocols, and complex transplant immunology management. Fellows gain exposure to advanced techniques available at only a limited number of transplant centers nationwide.
- Research opportunities are available throughout the fellowship. Fellows may participate in clinical transplantation research, transplant immunology studies, outcomes research, organ allocation policy research, and translational science projects. Those interested in academic careers can collaborate with investigators across NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
- Educational activities include transplant conferences, pathology reviews, multidisciplinary transplant meetings, journal clubs, research seminars, donor selection discussions, and case-based teaching sessions. Graduates are prepared for careers in transplant nephrology, academic medicine, transplant program leadership, and advanced kidney transplantation practice.
