Overview

  • The Nephrology Fellowship Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is a highly respected ACGME-accredited subspecialty training program that prepares physicians for careers in clinical nephrology, transplant medicine, academic medicine, and nephrology research. The program accepts a limited number of fellows each year, allowing for individualized mentorship and intensive clinical training.
  • Fellows receive training across several major institutions, including NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, and the NYU Langone Transplant Institute. These diverse clinical settings provide exposure to a wide range of renal diseases and patient populations.
  • The curriculum covers all major areas of nephrology, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, glomerular diseases, electrolyte abnormalities, hypertension, dialysis medicine, kidney transplantation, and critical care nephrology. Fellows gain extensive experience managing both common and highly complex renal disorders.
  • Clinical training includes inpatient consultation services, outpatient nephrology clinics, chronic hemodialysis units, peritoneal dialysis programs, continuous kidney replacement therapy, and transplant nephrology services. Fellows work closely with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to provide comprehensive kidney care.
  • A major strength of the program is its strong kidney transplant exposure through the NYU Langone Transplant Institute. Fellows participate in transplant evaluations, post-transplant care, transplant biopsies, immunosuppressive management, and long-term transplant follow-up.
  • Procedural training includes temporary dialysis catheter placement, kidney transplant biopsy exposure, dialysis access management, kidney pathology review, and interpretation of renal biopsy findings. Fellows work closely with dedicated kidney pathologists and transplant specialists.
  • Research is an important component of the fellowship. Fellows select research mentors during training and may participate in clinical, translational, epidemiologic, transplant, and outcomes-based nephrology research projects. The optional third year offers advanced research opportunities for those pursuing academic careers.
  • Educational activities include nephrology conferences, pathology conferences, journal clubs, board review sessions, multidisciplinary transplant meetings, research seminars, and case-based teaching conferences. Graduates are well prepared for board certification and leadership roles in nephrology practice, research, and medical education.
