Overview

  • The Transitional Year Residency Program affiliated with New York Medical College is an ACGME-accredited postgraduate internship program designed to provide physicians with a comprehensive and balanced clinical foundation before entering advanced specialty training. The program is primarily based at Bayonne Medical Center under the NYMC-CarePoint Health Consortium and serves as a preparatory PGY-1 year for multiple advanced residency specialties.
  • The curriculum is structured to provide broad exposure across several clinical disciplines including internal medicine, emergency medicine, ambulatory medicine, surgery, intensive care, and elective specialty rotations. Residents develop core clinical competencies in patient evaluation, acute care management, communication, professionalism, and multidisciplinary teamwork through hands-on inpatient and outpatient experiences.
  • The program is particularly beneficial for trainees pursuing advanced specialties that begin at the PGY-2 level such as anesthesiology, dermatology, diagnostic radiology, neurology, ophthalmology, and physical medicine & rehabilitation. The flexible curriculum allows residents to tailor elective rotations according to future specialty goals while fulfilling ACGME transitional year requirements.
  • Residents participate in structured didactic education including grand rounds, journal clubs, case discussions, morbidity and mortality conferences, simulation-based learning, and evidence-based medicine sessions. The educational environment emphasizes clinical reasoning, procedural exposure, patient safety, and professional development during the transition from medical school to specialty residency training.
  • The NYMC-affiliated training environment provides exposure to diverse patient populations and varied healthcare settings across New York and New Jersey. Faculty mentorship supports resident growth in clinical skills, career planning, wellness, and preparation for advanced residency programs. Graduates complete the program with strong foundational medical knowledge and practical clinical experience required for success in advanced specialty training.
