Transitional Year Residency Program

1. MD or DO from an accredited medical school
2. Completion of major licensing exams (USMLE/COMLEX)
3. Application through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
4. Participation in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)
5. Submission of personal statement, CV, letters of recommendation, medical school transcript, and performance evaluations
6. Current ECFMG status report for international medical graduates

The Transitional Year Residency Program at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center provides a broad, clinically oriented educational experience intended to prepare newly graduated physicians for advanced specialty training. Since its inception in 1969, the program has functioned as a stepping-stone toward diverse specialties including Radiology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Radiation Oncology, and Anesthesiology. Residents train at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center — Wisconsin’s largest private hospital — and may rotate through Aurora Sinai Medical Center for select internal medicine and elective experiences. The curriculum embodies flexibility to meet individual career goals, while building strong clinical foundations in internal medicine, emergency medicine, ambulatory care, and subspecialty electives. Required rotations include core blocks in Internal Medicine teaching services, ambulatory clinics, and emergency medicine, supplemented by elective rotations in areas such as cardiology, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology, dermatology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, surgery, and more based on resident interest. Didactic elements include conferences, acute care lecture series, journal clubs, and case conferences designed to support clinical reasoning and professional development. Graduates of the program consistently enter accredited specialty residencies and often receive high performance evaluations from advanced programs.
