The Thoracic Surgery Integrated Residency Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is an ACGME-accredited six-year integrated residency that was among the earliest integrated cardiothoracic surgery programs established in the United States. The curriculum combines comprehensive training in general surgery with progressively advanced experience in cardiac and thoracic surgery, enabling residents to develop expertise across the full spectrum of cardiothoracic care. Clinical training is centered at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and affiliated institutions, with dedicated rotations in adult cardiac surgery, general thoracic surgery, congenital heart surgery, cardiology critical care, cardiac anesthesia, and interventional cardiology. Residents gain extensive exposure to complex aortic surgery, structural heart disease, minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery, lung transplantation, heart failure surgery, thoracic oncology, and esophageal disorders. The program emphasizes multidisciplinary patient care, simulation-based technical skills training, research, and leadership development, preparing graduates for certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and careers in academic medicine or advanced cardiothoracic surgical practice.
