The Advanced Thoracic Surgery Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a two-year, non-ACGME fellowship designed to provide comprehensive training in lung transplantation and advanced surgical management of acute and chronic lung failure. Based at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, one of the leading lung transplant centres in the United States, the program offers fellows extensive exposure to more than 100 lung transplant procedures annually. The curriculum encompasses donor and recipient surgery, ECMO, ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP), minimally invasive thoracic surgery, thoracic oncology, pleural surgery, and complex airway procedures. Fellows participate in multidisciplinary transplant conferences, tumor boards, journal clubs, grand rounds, and morbidity and mortality conferences. A dedicated three-month research elective enables fellows to conduct clinical or basic science research, with an expectation of publishing at least one first-author peer-reviewed manuscript. Under the mentorship of internationally recognized thoracic surgeons and transplant specialists, fellows progressively assume greater operative responsibility and develop the clinical, academic, and leadership skills necessary for careers in advanced thoracic surgery and lung transplantation.
