Overview
- The Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is a comprehensive multidisciplinary training program designed to prepare physicians for clinical, academic, and research careers in sleep medicine. The fellowship combines extensive clinical exposure, advanced diagnostic training, research opportunities, and structured didactic education within one of the leading academic healthcare systems in the United States.
- Fellows train across multiple major institutions including NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, Tisch Hospital, and specialized outpatient sleep centers within NYU Langone Health. These diverse clinical settings provide exposure to a broad spectrum of sleep disorders across adult and pediatric patient populations.
- The fellowship emphasizes comprehensive management of common and complex sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, excessive daytime sleepiness, parasomnias, REM sleep behavior disorder, circadian rhythm disorders, restless legs syndrome, and sleep-related movement disorders. Fellows learn evidence-based approaches to diagnosis and treatment while developing expertise in long-term patient management.
- A major component of training involves advanced sleep diagnostics. Fellows receive extensive instruction in scoring and interpretation of in-laboratory polysomnography, home sleep apnea testing, multiple sleep latency testing (MSLT), maintenance of wakefulness testing (MWT), actigraphy, and sleep-related neurophysiological studies. Training also includes understanding indications, limitations, and clinical applications of sleep diagnostic technologies.
- The curriculum incorporates multidisciplinary exposure through rotations in pulmonology, neurology, psychiatry, pediatric sleep medicine, otolaryngology, sleep dentistry, and pulmonary function testing. Fellows work closely with specialists from multiple disciplines, reflecting the collaborative nature of modern sleep medicine practice.
- Research is strongly encouraged throughout fellowship training. Fellows may participate in clinical trials, sleep physiology research, sleep-disordered breathing studies, neurodegenerative disease research, sleep apnea outcomes projects, circadian rhythm investigations, and translational sleep science initiatives. Additional protected research opportunities may be available through extended academic pathways.
- Educational activities include twice-weekly sleep medicine conferences, case presentations, journal clubs, board preparation sessions, polysomnography review conferences, multidisciplinary sleep meetings, pulmonary conferences, neurology conferences, psychiatry educational sessions, and research seminars. Fellows receive mentorship from nationally recognized sleep medicine faculty and researchers.
- The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at NYU Langone Health is internationally recognized for excellence in patient care, education, and research. Graduates of the fellowship pursue careers in academic sleep medicine, pulmonary medicine, neurology, psychiatry, private practice sleep centers, hospital-based sleep programs, and sleep research institutions worldwide.
