Overview
- The Rheumatology Fellowship Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is a comprehensive subspecialty training program dedicated to developing future leaders in rheumatology, autoimmune disease management, clinical immunology, and academic medicine. The fellowship combines advanced clinical education, multidisciplinary patient care, research opportunities, and scholarly development within one of the most respected academic health systems in the United States.
- Fellows train across multiple clinical sites including NYU Langone Health, Tisch Hospital, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. These institutions provide exposure to diverse patient populations and a wide spectrum of rheumatologic diseases ranging from common inflammatory arthritis conditions to rare systemic autoimmune disorders.
- The fellowship emphasizes the diagnosis and management of complex rheumatic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, vasculitis syndromes, Sjögren’s syndrome, systemic sclerosis, inflammatory myopathies, crystal arthropathies, osteoporosis, and connective tissue disorders. Fellows gain experience managing both acute and chronic manifestations of autoimmune diseases.
- Clinical training includes outpatient continuity clinics, inpatient consultation services, infusion center management, multidisciplinary autoimmune disease clinics, and specialty rheumatology programs. Fellows work closely with experts in immunology, nephrology, dermatology, pulmonology, orthopedics, rehabilitation medicine, and other specialties involved in the care of patients with systemic inflammatory diseases.
- A major component of training is musculoskeletal evaluation and procedural expertise. Fellows develop skills in joint aspiration, intra-articular injections, musculoskeletal ultrasound, interpretation of imaging studies, and procedural management of inflammatory joint disorders. Training emphasizes evidence-based approaches to diagnosis and therapeutic decision-making.
- The program also provides extensive exposure to modern biologic therapies, targeted immunomodulatory treatments, infusion therapies, and advanced management strategies for complex autoimmune diseases. Fellows learn the safe use of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), biologic agents, targeted therapies, and emerging immunologic treatments.
- Research and academic scholarship are strongly encouraged throughout fellowship training. Fellows may participate in clinical trials, translational immunology research, autoimmune disease investigations, outcomes research, epidemiologic studies, musculoskeletal imaging research, and quality improvement initiatives. Faculty mentorship supports academic productivity, national presentations, and publication development.
- Educational activities include rheumatology conferences, journal clubs, multidisciplinary case discussions, immunology seminars, board review sessions, radiology conferences, pathology reviews, musculoskeletal ultrasound workshops, and research meetings. Fellows work directly with nationally recognized faculty members who contribute significantly to advances in rheumatology and autoimmune disease research.
- Graduates of the fellowship pursue careers in academic rheumatology, private practice, autoimmune disease centers, clinical research programs, immunology research institutions, and hospital-based rheumatology services. The fellowship prepares physicians for leadership roles in modern rheumatology and clinical immunology while providing eligibility for board certification in Rheumatology.
