Overview

The Post-Baccalaureate Categorical Certificate – Microbiology at UTMB is an intensive, focused clinical laboratory training program that builds expertise in medical microbiology. Students complete specialized coursework designed to provide knowledge of pathogens, laboratory diagnostic methodologies, advanced microbiological techniques, parasitology, and managerial principles relevant to clinical laboratory settings. The curriculum combines didactic classroom instruction with a clinical preceptorship (practicum) where students gain hands-on experience in real clinical laboratories under supervision. Successful completion of the program makes candidates eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification examination in the microbiology category, which is required for professional recognition and practice in clinical microbiology labs.
