PhD in Microbiology and Immunology

• Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) or equivalent from an accredited institution
• A strong academic background in biological sciences, microbiology, immunology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or related biomedical sciences is preferred
• Prior research experience in laboratory-based biological sciences is highly recommended
• Applicants should demonstrate research interest in areas such as microbial pathogenesis, immunology, infectious diseases, molecular biology, and host–pathogen interactions
• Strong academic records, research potential, recommendation letters, and statement of purpose are considered during selection
• International applicants must meet UNC Graduate School requirements, including English language proficiency requirements where applicable

The PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at UNC School of Medicine (UNCSOM), Chapel Hill is a research-focused doctoral program designed to provide advanced training in microbiology, immunology, infectious diseases, and molecular biomedical sciences. The program develops independent scientists through interdisciplinary coursework, laboratory rotations, seminars, research training, and dissertation research. Students gain expertise in areas such as microbial pathogenesis, virology, bacteriology, immunobiology, host–pathogen interactions, molecular mechanisms of disease, and immune system regulation. The program begins through the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP), allowing students to explore different research areas before selecting a dissertation mentor. Through comprehensive research experience and scientific training, graduates are prepared for careers in academic research, biotechnology, healthcare, and biomedical science fields.
