The PhD in Microbiology & Immunology at UTMB is designed to train independent biomedical scientists capable of addressing critical problems in infectious disease, host-pathogen interactions, microbial genetics, and immunological regulation. Students begin with foundational coursework (including the Basic Biomedical Science Curriculum) and laboratory rotations, then focus on specialized coursework in virology, bacteriology, immunology, and research seminars. Doctoral candidates conduct original, hypothesis-driven research under faculty mentorship resulting in a dissertation that contributes new scientific knowledge. The training fosters skills in experimental design, data analysis, scientific communication, and critical thinking. Graduates are prepared for academic, industry, government, and clinical research careers.
