The MS – Ophthalmology program at Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital & Research Institute offers comprehensive postgraduate clinical and surgical training in eye care. The curriculum follows the competency‑based framework as prescribed by the National Medical Commission, emphasizing both theoretical knowledge and extensive hands‑on experience. Residents are trained in key diagnostic tools such as slit‑lamp biomicroscopy, ophthalmoscopy, tonometry, optical coherence tomography (OCT), perimetry, and ultrasonography, equipping them to evaluate and manage a wide range of ocular conditions. Surgical exposure includes cataract surgery (phacoemulsification and SICS), glaucoma procedures, corneal interventions, squint correction, lid and orbital surgery, and retina care utilizing advanced surgical techniques. The department conducts regular seminars, case discussions, journal clubs, wet lab sessions, community eye care camps, and research activities aimed at developing professionals who are both clinically competent and research‑oriented. Graduates are prepared for independent practice, further sub‑specialization, or academic roles in ophthalmic care.
