The Medical Physics Residency Program at UC Irvine School of Medicine is a 2-year CAMPEP-accredited clinical residency program designed to provide comprehensive training in radiation oncology medical physics and prepare graduates for independent clinical practice. The program focuses on developing expertise in radiation therapy physics, treatment planning, radiation safety, dosimetry, quality assurance, and advanced treatment technologies. Residents receive intensive clinical and didactic training through supervised rotations under experienced medical physicists, gaining hands-on experience with modern radiation oncology systems and procedures. The curriculum includes training in CT simulation and imaging, 3D external beam treatment planning, IMRT planning, HDR brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), machine commissioning, acceptance testing, radiation safety, and quality assurance of treatment equipment. Residents participate in treatment planning conferences, tumor boards, journal clubs, and research activities, with opportunities to present work at professional meetings such as AAPM and ASTRO. The program prepares graduates for certification primarily through the American Board of Radiology (ABR) and careers as clinical medical physicists in radiation oncology departments.
