General Surgery Residency Program

• Hold an MD/DO or an equivalent medical degree (MBBS or equivalent for international graduates).
• Apply within 3 years of medical school graduation.
• Apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
• Submit the following documents:
• Personal Statement
• Medical School Transcript
• Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE/Dean's Letter)
• Three Letters of Recommendation
• USMLE scores
• ECFMG Certificate (for International Medical Graduates, if applicable)
• International applicants must be eligible for a J-1 visa sponsored through ECFMG.

The General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Illinois College of Medicine (UICOM), Chicago is an ACGME-accredited five-year residency that provides comprehensive training in all aspects of general surgery. Residents gain extensive operative and clinical experience across multiple affiliated teaching hospitals, caring for a diverse patient population. The program offers structured training in trauma, acute care surgery, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, surgical oncology, colorectal, vascular, transplant, endocrine, breast, pediatric, and cardiothoracic surgery. It also emphasizes simulation-based education, research, leadership development, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Graduates are well prepared for independent surgical practice or competitive fellowship training in surgical subspecialties.
