The General Surgery Residency Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a highly respected ACGME-accredited surgical training program designed to develop skilled surgeons, clinician-scientists, educators, and future leaders in academic and community surgery. Based primarily at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, one of the premier academic medical centers in the United States, the program offers extensive exposure to complex surgical diseases and advanced operative procedures. Residents receive progressive responsibility throughout training while working alongside internationally recognized surgeons across multiple surgical subspecialties. Clinical experiences encompass gastrointestinal surgery, surgical oncology, trauma and acute care surgery, transplant surgery, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, endocrine surgery, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, and minimally invasive surgery. The curriculum integrates intensive operative experience, multidisciplinary conferences, simulation-based education, morbidity and mortality conferences, board review sessions, and scholarly activities. A distinguishing feature of the program is its strong emphasis on surgical research, innovation, quality improvement, and physician-scientist development, with many residents pursuing dedicated research years.
