Fellowship in Transfusion Medicine

• Must have completed training in an ACGME-approved residency program in:
• Anatomic & Clinical Pathology (AP/CP), or
• Clinical Pathology (CP) before the fellowship start date.
• Candidates who have completed, are completing, or plan to complete training in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, or other medical specialties may also be considered.
• Must meet the University of Illinois Graduate Medical Education (GME) requirements for fellowship appointment.
• Must fulfill applicable medical licensure and credentialing requirements before starting the fellowship.

The Transfusion Medicine Fellowship is a 1-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship program in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine. The program provides comprehensive training in clinical transfusion medicine, therapeutic apheresis, immunohematology, transplantation immunology, stem cell collection and processing, coagulation, donor management, blood component preparation, and patient blood management. Fellows gain hands-on experience in managing complex transfusion services supporting solid organ transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, pediatric care, obstetrics, trauma, and sickle cell disease programs. The fellowship also emphasizes clinical consultation, laboratory management, quality improvement, research, and administrative skills, preparing graduates for leadership roles as transfusion medicine specialists in academic hospitals, blood centers, and healthcare systems.
