Fellowship in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine

The Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowship Program at UC Irvine School of Medicine, in collaboration with the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, is a 1-year ACGME-accredited clinical fellowship program designed to provide advanced training in the comprehensive management of patients with spinal cord injuries and disorders. The program offers extensive clinical experience in acute, subacute, and long-term spinal cord injury care, including inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient management, and multidisciplinary treatment approaches. Fellows gain expertise in managing SCI-related complications such as neurogenic bladder and bowel, spasticity, pressure injuries, pain management, respiratory issues, mobility limitations, and wheelchair management. The fellowship includes exposure to specialized clinics, rehabilitation services, urology, neurology, neurosurgery, and other multidisciplinary care teams. Fellows also participate in weekly educational sessions, SCI-focused lectures, journal clubs, research activities, quality improvement projects, and teaching opportunities, preparing them for leadership roles in spinal cord injury medicine and rehabilitation care.

1. Complete and submit the Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowship application
2. Submit all required supporting documents to the fellowship program
3. Applications are reviewed by the UC Irvine/VA Long Beach SCI Medicine Fellowship Selection Committee
4. Selected applicants are invited for virtual interviews (typically conducted in September)
5. Program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) SCI Medicine Match
6. Final selection is completed through the NRMP Match process
7. Selected fellows complete institutional onboarding and credentialing requirements before starting the fellowship
