Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (FPOS)

• Required Degree: MD (Doctor of Medicine) / equivalent medical degree.
• Must have successfully completed an accredited three-year Ophthalmology Residency Program.
• Must have completed USMLE Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3.
• Must have successfully completed the Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program (OKAP).
• Must obtain a California medical license before beginning the fellowship.
• Applicants must be U.S. citizens or hold a valid J-1 visa for clinical fellowship training eligibility.

The Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Fellowship (FPOS) at UC Irvine School of Medicine (Gavin Herbert Eye Institute), Irvine is a 12-month advanced ophthalmology fellowship program that provides specialized training in pediatric eye care, pediatric ocular surgery, and strabismus management in children and adults. The program offers comprehensive clinical and surgical exposure in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric eye conditions including retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), ptosis, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, amblyopia, refractive errors, pediatric cataracts, pediatric glaucoma, and ocular manifestations of genetic and systemic disorders. Fellows receive hands-on surgical training in strabismus procedures and pediatric ophthalmic surgeries through rotations at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), UCI Medical Center, and the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute. The fellowship also includes case discussions, journal clubs, multidisciplinary rounds, research opportunities, and teaching activities, preparing graduates for independent practice as clinical and surgical pediatric ophthalmologists and strabismus specialists.
