Overview
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital’s Department of Anaesthesia runs a comprehensive pain service, including both acute pain rounds and a chronic pain medicine clinic. The acute pain service is consultant-led and involves a multidisciplinary team (nursing, psychology, social work) to tailor pain management to individual patient needs. The chronic pain fellowship is part of the FPMANZCA training structure, giving fellows exposure to interventional procedures, pain clinics, ward consults, and rehabilitation-based multidisciplinary practice. The fellowship emphasises continuity of patient care, decision-making, and the development of independent practice in pain medicine. Fellows may also participate in audits, research, and quality-improvement projects within the pain service. Because the pain fellowship is integrated into the anaesthesia department, fellows often balance theatre-based anaesthesia work with sessions in pain clinics and acute-pain service rounds.
