Fellowship in Medical Retina

• Must hold a medical degree (MD or equivalent) from an approved medical school.
• Must have successfully completed a three-year Ophthalmology Residency Program.
• Must have completed USMLE Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3.
• Must have successfully completed the Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program (OKAP).
• Must obtain a California medical license before beginning the fellowship.
• Applicants for the Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship must be U.S. board-eligible ophthalmologists.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible for required visa status (such as J-1, where applicable).

The Retina Fellowship at UC Irvine School of Medicine (Gavin Herbert Eye Institute), Irvine is an advanced ophthalmology fellowship program focused on comprehensive training in medical retina, vitreoretinal diseases, and retinal surgery. The program provides extensive clinical and surgical exposure in the diagnosis and management of complex retinal conditions, including retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular diseases, retinal vascular disorders, and other vitreoretinal pathologies. Fellows receive hands-on experience in advanced retinal procedures, vitreoretinal surgery, laser treatments, and intravitreal therapies under the guidance of experienced retina specialists. The fellowship also includes opportunities for clinical research, academic development, resident teaching, and participation in conferences and surgical training activities, preparing graduates for careers as vitreoretinal specialists, retinal surgeons, and academic ophthalmologists.
