Overview
The Fellowship in Medical Biochemical Genetics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine provides specialized training in the diagnosis and management of inborn errors of metabolism and biochemical genetic disorders. The program emphasizes comprehensive clinical care through exposure to metabolic clinics, inpatient consultations, and newborn screening programs, allowing fellows to develop expertise in evaluating metabolic diseases across all age groups. Trainees gain hands-on experience in biochemical genetics laboratories, including metabolic testing, enzyme analysis, and interpretation of complex diagnostic results. The fellowship also includes training in dietary and medical management of metabolic conditions, emergency care of metabolic crises, and long-term patient follow-up. In addition, fellows participate in research activities, academic conferences, and interdisciplinary collaborations with specialists in pediatrics, neurology, and nutrition. Structured teaching and mentorship prepare trainees for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.

Eligibility
- Must be a graduate in good standing from a recognized/approved medical or osteopathy school (MD/DO)
- Must have successfully completed at least one year of ACGME-accredited residency training in a primary care specialty (Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Obstetrics & Gynecology)
- Must provide documentation of residency training along with a Letter of Recommendation from the Residency Program Director at the time of application
- Applicants with non-U.S. residency/clinical training must apply to the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics for training credit approval
- Must meet NIH funding eligibility (U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or permanent resident); otherwise, external funding is required
- International medical graduates must have a valid ECFMG Certificate
- Must be willing to appear for ABMGG certification examinations after completion of training
- May be required to obtain medical licensure in the State of Maryland
