Fellowship in International Emergency Medicine

• Must have MD / DO (or equivalent medical degree)
• Must complete Emergency Medicine Residency
• Should be board-eligible or board-certified in Emergency Medicine
• Eligible to work/practice as a physician in Emergency Medicine
• Interest in global health / international emergency medicine
• Willing to complete MPH (Master of Public Health) during fellowship

The International Emergency Medicine Fellowship at SUNY Downstate is a specialized training program designed for emergency physicians who want to work in global health and international healthcare systems. The fellowship focuses on developing skills to improve emergency care delivery in low-resource and underserved settings around the world. It integrates clinical emergency medicine with public health, disaster response, and humanitarian medicine. Fellows gain experience in managing emergencies in diverse environments, participate in international fieldwork and global health projects, and learn how to design and implement emergency care systems. The program also includes academic training—often through a Master of Public Health (MPH)—along with research, teaching, and leadership development. Overall, it prepares physicians for careers in global emergency medicine, disaster relief, and leadership roles in international health organizations.
