Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine

• Completion of an ACGME or ACGME-I accredited Internal Medicine or Family Medicine residency
• For international residency programs, ACGME-I accreditation must be verified via the ACGME website
• J1 visa holders are accepted
• Application submitted through ERAS (paper application accepted only if ERAS submission is not possible)

The Geriatric Fellowship at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago, is a one-year ACGME-accredited program administered by the Division of Academic Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. It offers comprehensive training in gerontology and geriatrics, with fellows rotating through diverse clinical settings including the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, and multiple long-term care facilities across the Chicago area. The curriculum includes weekly half-day clinics at Geri-PACT, the UI South Loop Clinic, and Barton Senior Residences, alongside monthly rotations in Home Based Primary Care, VA Consults, Hospice & Palliative Care, Gero-Psychiatry, Memory Disorders Clinic, and other specialty electives. Fellows engage in structured educational activities such as monthly journal clubs, weekly geriatric lectures, a required quality improvement project, and presentation of a poster or abstract at a local or national conference, including the American Geriatrics Society Conference. The program accepts only 4 fellows per year, making it a highly focused, mentorship-driven training environment. About one-third of graduates go on to become geriatric clinician-educators, and those interested in research can pursue second-year fellowship opportunities through UIC's CLASS and PREMIER programs. The program accepts J1 visa holders and applications are processed through ERAS.
