Fellowship in Geriatric Hospice and Palliative Medicine

• Completion of MD / DO or equivalent medical degree
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency program
• Eligible residency backgrounds include:
• Internal Medicine
• Family Medicine
• Emergency Medicine
• Neurology
• Pediatrics
• Psychiatry
• Anesthesiology
• Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
• Other ACGME-approved specialties for Hospice & Palliative Medicine
• Must be Board Eligible / Board Certified in the primary specialty
• Strong interest in geriatrics, hospice care, palliative medicine, and serious illness management
• Must meet UNC Graduate Medical Education requirements
• International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must fulfill ECFMG certification and visa requirements (if applicable)

The Geriatric-Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship (Geri-Pal Fellowship) at UNC School of Medicine is an advanced interdisciplinary training program focused on providing specialized care for older adults and patients with serious, chronic, or life-limiting illnesses. The fellowship combines principles of geriatric medicine, hospice care, and palliative medicine to train physicians in comprehensive symptom management, advance care planning, communication with patients and families, and improving quality of life. Fellows gain clinical experience through inpatient and outpatient palliative care services, geriatric clinics, hospice programs, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams. The program emphasizes management of complex medical conditions in elderly patients, ethical decision-making, psychosocial support, quality improvement, research, and leadership skills. UNC’s geriatrics training includes clinical experiences in hospice and palliative medicine along with other geriatric care settings, preparing graduates for careers in academic medicine, hospice programs, and specialized supportive care services.
