Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery

The Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at UMass Chan Medical School is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program for physicians who have completed a general surgery residency, delivered by a five-physician, colorectal-only academic practice with a strong clinical focus on minimally invasive techniques, including robotic surgery, transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME), and endoluminal colonic stenting. Fellows gain rigorous, hands-on clinical training in advanced colorectal surgical procedures while contributing to research, education of medical students and residents, and community outreach through initiatives like annual colorectal cancer symposiums. The program also emphasizes trainee wellness, incorporating structured support for resilience and burnout prevention, and prepares fellows to become well-rounded colorectal surgeons ready to lead innovative practice and research in the field.

1. Applications processed through the Colon and Rectal Surgery Matching Service (CaRSMS)
2. Submit required documents: CV, personal statement, medical school transcript, letters of recommendation, general surgery residency training verification, USMLE scores
3. Selected candidates invited to interview with the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery faculty
4. Both program and applicant submit rank lists through the match
5. Upon matching, complete credentialing, license verification, and pre-employment checks before the fellowship start date
