Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery

The Colon & Rectal Surgery Fellowship at the University of Minnesota Medical School is a 1-year postgraduate training program designed to provide comprehensive advanced training in colon and rectal surgery. Fellows receive extensive operative and clinical experience in major abdominal and anorectal procedures, colonoscopy, polypectomy, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, pelvic floor disorders, endorectal ultrasound, and transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM). Training takes place across academic, Veterans Affairs, and private-practice clinical sites, with supervised exposure to endoscopy, operative care, outpatient practice, and perioperative management. Fellows also participate in clinical and basic science research, with each fellow assigned a research project and encouraged to submit work to the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

5. Submit a copy of the medical diploma.
6. Submit USMLE/ABSITE scores.
7. Submit 3 letters of recommendation.
8. IMG applicants must submit ECFMG certification.
9. Applications are reviewed by the program's Interview Committee.
10. Selected applicants are invited for virtual interviews.
11. The program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and offers 5 clinical positions each academic year.
12. For the 2027–2028 appointment year, applications opened July 2, 2026, with an August 1, 2026 deadline.
