Fellowship in Advanced Neonatal Cardiac Intensive Care and Hemodynamics

The Fellowship in Advanced Neonatal Cardiac Intensive Care and Hemodynamics at UC Irvine School of Medicine is a highly specialized one-year advanced clinical training program designed for neonatologists seeking expertise in neonatal cardiovascular intensive care. The program uniquely integrates neonatal cardiac intensive care with advanced hemodynamic monitoring and targeted neonatal echocardiography, making it one of the few programs of its kind in the United States. Fellows are trained in high-acuity Level III/IV NICU settings, primarily at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), where they manage critically ill newborns with complex cardiac conditions, circulatory instability, and congenital heart disease. The curriculum includes hands-on experience in bedside functional echocardiography, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and multidisciplinary cardiac care, along with exposure to research and academic development. The program emphasizes a flexible and comprehensive learning environment, enabling fellows to develop advanced diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills for managing the most vulnerable neonatal patients and preparing them for leadership roles in neonatal cardiac critical care.
