Fellowship Course in Renal Transplantation

The Renal Transplant Fellowship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine is a one-year postdoctoral fellowship providing advanced clinical training in kidney and pancreas transplantation. Fellows gain comprehensive experience in inpatient transplant nephrology, outpatient transplant clinics, evaluation of transplant recipients and donors, renal allograft biopsies, immunosuppression, transplant complications, opportunistic infections, and long-term graft management. Training also includes electives in apheresis, transplant infectious diseases, renal pathology, liver transplantation, and pediatric transplant nephrology, along with a mandatory immune-histocompatibility laboratory rotation. Fellows participate in multidisciplinary transplant conferences and complete a clinical or basic science research project, with opportunities for presentations and publications.

1. Complete the Renal Transplant Nephrology Fellowship application form.
2. Submit a personal statement.
3. Submit a current Curriculum Vitae (CV).
4. Submit medical school transcripts.
5. Submit medical school diploma.
6. Submit three Letters of Recommendation, including one from the Nephrology Fellowship Program Director.
7. Submit a certificate of ACGME-accredited residency training.
8. Submit certification or verification of ACGME-accredited Nephrology fellowship training, including the anticipated graduation date if applicable.
9. Submit all three United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step scores and/or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) scores, if applicable.
10. International Medical Graduates must submit a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate.
11. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants requiring visa support are advised to apply 6–9 months before their anticipated start date.
12. The fellowship academic year runs from July 1 through June 30.
