Doctor of Occupational Therapy (DOT)

The Doctorate in Occupational Therapy (OTD) at UTMB is an entry-level doctoral program that prepares graduates for professional practice with a focus on evidence-based assessment, intervention, and leadership in occupational therapy. Students learn through a combination of theoretical coursework, simulation labs, community-based experiences, and supervised clinical fieldwork. The program emphasizes holistic, client-centered care, critical thinking, and interprofessional collaboration. Graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification exam administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) and pursue state licensure as occupational therapists. The curriculum fosters professional identity development and prepares students to function as practitioners, educators, and contributors to the advancement of the occupational therapy profession.

1. Complete and submit the OTCAS centralized application by the program deadline (typically January 31).
2. Submit all prerequisite transcripts, observation hour documentation, references, and supplemental materials.
3. Pay application fees (OTCAS + UTMB supplemental if required).
4. Monitor application status through UTMB and OTCAS portals.
5. Selected applicants are invited for an interview with the admissions committee.
6. Admissions decisions are communicated; admitted students complete background check and enrollment steps.
7. Upon acceptance, attend orientation and prepare for the start of coursework.
