Doctor of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (DCLS)

1. Completion of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science or related area.
2. Certified as a generalist Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent).
3. Minimum of three years professional laboratory experience.
4. Official transcripts from all institutions attended.

The Doctor of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (DCLS) at UTMB is a professional terminal degree designed to elevate the clinical expertise of practicing medical laboratory scientists. The program emphasizes advanced diagnostic reasoning, leadership in laboratory utilization, interprofessional collaboration, evidence-based practice, and education. Students build skills to consult with healthcare teams, interpret complex laboratory data, conduct clinical research, and influence practice standards. Most coursework is delivered online, but students must complete four on-campus clinical rotations, typically one per year.
