The Doctor of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (DCLS) at UTMB is a professional terminal degree designed to elevate the clinical expertise of practicing medical laboratory scientists. The program emphasizes advanced diagnostic reasoning, leadership in laboratory utilization, interprofessional collaboration, evidence-based practice, and education. Students build skills to consult with healthcare teams, interpret complex laboratory data, conduct clinical research, and influence practice standards. Most coursework is delivered online, but students must complete four on-campus clinical rotations, typically one per year. The DCLS was one of the first accredited programs of its kind in the United States and prepares graduates to be practitioners, educators, and leaders in laboratory medicine.
