Combined Residency in Emergency Medicine and Anesthesiology

• Must submit a ResidencyCAS application with Dean’s Letter (MSPE)
• Three Letters of Recommendation are mandatory, including: One Emergency Medicine SLOE (Standardized Letter of Evaluation)
• One Anesthesiology letter (or ICU rotation acceptable)
• For International Medical Graduates (IMGs):
• Must have ECFMG certification
• Must submit exam score reports (ECFMG / FMGEMS / FLEX)
• At least one letter from a U.S. Emergency Medicine physician (recommended)
• Hospital accepts ONLY J-1 visa
• One year of U.S. clinical experience is REQUIRED (clearly mentioned on page)
• No failing scores in USMLE Step 1 & Step 2
• If previously trained in residency → must submit letter from prior Program Director

The Combined Emergency Medicine–Anesthesiology Residency Program at Johns Hopkins is a 5-year integrated residency designed to train physicians in both emergency medicine and anesthesiology simultaneously. The program is ACGME-accredited and nationally approved by both specialty boards, making it one of the first programs of its kind in the United States. It provides a comprehensive, dual-specialty curriculum that combines acute care management in the emergency department with perioperative and critical care expertise from anesthesiology. Residents are trained across diverse clinical settings, including trauma, intensive care, operating rooms, and emergency services. The curriculum also emphasizes longitudinal skill development in areas such as critical care, ultrasound, acute pain management, global/austere medicine, and medical education, preparing graduates for versatile careers in high-acuity patient care and academic medicine.
