Categorical Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Categorical Internal Medicine Residency Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is a three-year ACGME-accredited residency program designed to provide comprehensive training in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of adult medical conditions. The program offers broad clinical exposure through inpatient wards, intensive care units, ambulatory clinics, emergency medicine, and subspecialty rotations. Residents develop expertise in evidence-based patient care while gaining experience in areas such as cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, pulmonary medicine, endocrinology, infectious diseases, oncology, and critical care. The program emphasizes clinical excellence, research, quality improvement, health equity, and preparation for independent practice or fellowship training in medical subspecialties.

8. Minimum three letters of recommendation
3. Application review and candidate selection by the residency committee
4. Selected applicants are invited for a virtual interview
5. Final candidates participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) process for residency placement
6. Selected residents complete credentialing, onboarding, and begin PGY-1 training
