Overview
The B.Sc. in Renal Dialysis Technology (RDT) is a specialised undergraduate programme focused on equipping students with the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary for performing renal replacement therapies such as haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). The curriculum starts with foundational sciences—anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology and microbiology—and then progresses into specialised modules on renal disease management, dialysis equipment and water treatment systems, extracorporeal circuits, machine operation and monitoring, patient care during dialysis, infection control, and emergency management. Students also undergo clinical attachments/internships in hospital dialysis units or nephrology centres, gaining real-world exposure to patient monitoring, machine setup/troubleshooting, vascular access management, and quality assurance. Given the rising prevalence of chronic kidney disease and the expansion of dialysis centres, the role of trained renal dialysis technologists is increasingly critical in healthcare. The programme thus opens pathways into hospitals, dialysis clinics, home dialysis services, equipment servicing/maintenance firms, and further allied health academics or research.
