Overview

The Women’s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is designed to develop advanced clinical specialists in women's and pelvic health rehabilitation. The residency combines intensive clinical practice, structured mentorship, didactic education, and scholarly activities to enhance clinical expertise beyond entry-level physical therapy training. Residents gain extensive experience managing patients with pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary incontinence, faecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, chronic pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, pregnancy-related conditions, postpartum recovery, and musculoskeletal disorders affecting women. Training includes advanced examination techniques, evidence-based interventions, patient education, behavioural health integration, and interdisciplinary care coordination. Residents work closely with experienced physical therapists, physicians, urogynecologists, colorectal specialists, obstetricians, gynaecologists, and other healthcare professionals. The curriculum emphasises clinical reasoning, research literacy, teaching skills, and professional leadership. Residents also participate in journal clubs, case presentations, research projects, and continuing education activities. Upon completion, graduates are well prepared for board certification in Women's Health Physical Therapy and advanced clinical practice, academic positions, leadership roles, and specialised pelvic health rehabilitation services.
