About

St. Theresa's Hospital was started in the year 1938 by a group French Missionary Sisters for treating female TB patients. Tuberculosis was a much dreaded disease in those days owing to a lack of medical facilities and slow progress of medical science in this field. At first, a small cottage was built as living quarters for the Sisters and the hospital staff. Later a building was constructed for TB. patients and was named St. Theresa's TB Sanatorium. Initially, this service was for female TB patients only However as patients started arriving from all over the sate and also from neighbouring states, there was much demand to treat male TB patients too. Therefore, male TB patients were initially treated as outpatients but later small shelters were erected for treating them as inpatients. In 1955 an outpatient dispensary was opened to meet the growing needs of local people together with a separate block with beds and a clinic for maternity cases. In a very short time, St Theresa's Maternity Unit gained much popularity in Bangalore.
