Rural Family Medicine Residency Program

1. MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school
2. Eligibility for residency training in the United States
3. Completion of USMLE or COMLEX licensing examinations
4. Application submitted through ERAS with necessary documentation
5. Participation in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Interview process
6. Letters of recommendation and evidence of clinical experience in medicine

The Rural Family Medicine Residency is a fully accredited postgraduate training program aimed at preparing physicians for independent practice in rural and underserved areas. The program adopts a 1-2 training model, where the first postgraduate year (PGY1) is spent in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, gaining exposure to inpatient and emergency care alongside the core family medicine residents from Aurora St. Luke’s and affiliated hospitals. The subsequent second and third years (PGY2 and PGY3) are based at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center and associated rural clinic sites in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, where residents focus on full-spectrum outpatient care, preventive health, continuity clinic practice, and community-oriented medical skills relevant to rural populations. Throughout the three years, residents maintain a continuity clinic at the Aurora Lakeland Family Medicine Clinic, managing longitudinal patient care and developing comprehensive clinical competence. The residency emphasizes leadership, clinical judgment, and community health engagement while building a foundation in both inpatient and outpatient family medicine practice. Graduates are well-equipped to serve diverse patient populations in rural settings or pursue further specialized training.
