Residency Program in Occupational and Environmental Medicine

• Must hold an MD or equivalent medical degree from an accredited medical school
• Must have completed at least one year of clinical training in an ACGME-accredited residency program before entering the Occupational Medicine Residency
• Must meet the Medical Board of California requirements for medical licensure
• Candidates who have completed the required clinical training and hold a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree or equivalent may be considered for direct admission into the practicum phase of the program
• Must meet eligibility requirements for ABPM (American Board of Preventive Medicine) Occupational Medicine certification pathway
• International Medical Graduates must meet applicable U.S. licensing and credentialing requirements

The Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency Program at UC Irvine School of Medicine is a two-year ACGME-accredited residency program designed to train physicians as specialists in occupational health, environmental medicine, and preventive medicine. The program combines academic coursework, clinical training, field-based experiences, and research activities to develop expertise in identifying, preventing, and managing health risks related to workplace and environmental exposures. Residents complete training through the UC Irvine Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH), occupational medicine clinics, workplace site visits, public health agencies, and practicum rotations. The curriculum includes areas such as occupational medicine, environmental health, epidemiology, biostatistics, toxicology, industrial hygiene, workplace safety, occupational health regulations, and preventive medicine. Residents also complete a Master of Science degree in Environmental Health Sciences with a research thesis as part of the program. The residency prepares graduates for careers in corporate occupational health, clinical occupational medicine, public health organizations, regulatory agencies, research, and academic medicine.
