Overview
- During the first two years of the Ph.D program (which includes the period of course work), scholars are paid a fellowship of ₹ 25,000/- per month
- Thereafter, scholars are placed in Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) grade and are paid ₹ 28,000/- per month
- In addition, there is an annual contingency grant of ₹ 32,000/- to meet expenses on books and other research related expenses including academic travel.
- The HBNI also supports the scholars for participating in an International conference once during the doctoral programme.
- On campus hostel accommodation is normally provided to all scholars.
- Medical facilities are also available to them.
Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institution funded by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. Eligibility
- M.Sc. in Physics with a minimum of 55% marks (in aggregate) or equivalent CGPA cumulatively till the last year/ semester.
- Candidates appearing for M.Sc exam and who satisfy any of the below criteria can apply but their admission will be treated as provisional
- A valid GATE score with rank upto 200, or CSIR NET (JRF) within the last one year
- Candidate having a JEST rank upto 250 (for PhD only)

Admission Process:
- Institute invites applications for PhD programme admissions in November month every year, usually application deadline will be first week of December.
- Candidates are required to upload the supporting documents regarding GATE/ NET at the time of online application form and produce the same in original at the time of selection.
- Eligible candidates are required to appear for a written test at institute as per scheduled date & time
- Shortlisted on the basis of the performance in the written test will appear for a personal interview, list will be published on website.
- Final selection will be based on the performance in the test and the personal interview.
- The academic session starts in January month.
