PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology

The PhD in Pharmacology & Toxicology at UTMB is a research‐oriented doctoral program within the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, designed to train future independent investigators and scientific leaders in diverse areas of pharmacology and toxicology research. The curriculum typically begins with foundational training through the Basic Biomedical Science Curriculum (BBSC), which includes core biomedical science courses and research rotations shared with other GSBS PhD programs, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Students then engage in advanced coursework and deeply focused laboratory research under the mentorship of faculty in the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology and related research centers. Research areas include neuropharmacology, cancer pharmacology, vaccine development, environmental toxicology, drug action mechanisms, and host responses to chemical and biological agents. Graduates are prepared for careers in academia, biotechnology, pharmaceutical industry research, and government research institutions.
