PhD in Pathobiology & Translational Science

The PhD in Pathobiology & Translational Science at UNC School of Medicine (UNCSOM), Chapel Hill is an interdisciplinary research program focused on understanding the biological mechanisms of human disease and translating scientific discoveries into improved diagnostics and therapies. The program provides advanced training in experimental pathology, molecular and cellular disease mechanisms, immunology, cancer biology, infectious diseases, inflammation, and translational biomedical research. Students receive training through interdisciplinary coursework, laboratory rotations, seminars, research proposal development, and independent dissertation research. The program prepares graduates to become independent biomedical researchers and pursue careers in academic institutions, healthcare research, biotechnology, pharmaceutical industries, and other biomedical science fields.

1. Applicants apply through the Biological & Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP) admission system, which serves as the umbrella admission program for multiple PhD programs at UNC.

3. Admitted students begin with the BBSP first-year training program, including foundational coursework and laboratory rotations.
4. After the first year, students transition into the Pathobiology & Translational Science PhD program, complete advanced coursework, examinations, dissertation research, and defend their dissertation.
