PhD in Biomedical Science

• Hold a Bachelor’s degree (Baccalaureate degree) or equivalent from an accredited institution.
• Have completed academic coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics (biochemistry and physiology coursework is also beneficial).
• Demonstrate a strong interest in biomedical research.
• Prior research experience is highly valued during the selection process.
• International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements (TOEFL scores are required for applicants from countries where English is not the primary language).
• GRE scores are not required for the GEMS PhD program.

The PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Graduate Education in bioMedical Sciences – GEMS Program) at the University of Illinois College of Medicine (UICOM), Chicago is an interdisciplinary doctoral research program designed to provide advanced training in biomedical science research. The program combines foundational biomedical coursework, laboratory rotations, specialized research training, and independent dissertation research. Students receive training in areas such as Cancer Biology, Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Integrative and Translational Physiology, Microbiology Immunity and Inflammation, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Neurobiology.
