PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency

1. PharmD degree from an ACPE-accredited program
2. Eligibility for pharmacist licensure in the state of Illinois
3. Licensure must be obtained within 90 days of residency start date
4. Completion of application through the centralized application service (PhORCAS)
5. Submission of required documents (letter of intent, CV, transcripts, letters of recommendation)

The PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Lurie Children’s Hospital is a 12-month postgraduate residency designed to build upon PharmD education and prepare pharmacists for practice in diverse settings, particularly pediatric clinical pharmacy. Residents complete structured core rotations in areas such as general pediatrics, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, neonatal ICU, and pediatric ICU, alongside longitudinal experiences in management, research, staffing, and teaching. Elective rotations allow advanced exposure to specialties like cardiac ICU, GI/kidney, pharmacogenomics, organ transplant, and more. Teaching experiences include precepting pharmacy students, presenting continuing education seminars, and participating in journal clubs and case discussions. Residents also engage in significant projects such as quality improvement studies, research presentations at national meetings, and involvement with pharmacy committees. The program fosters leadership, clinical reasoning, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills to support residents in becoming well-rounded, independent practitioners and prepare them for further advanced training or board certification.
