Occupational Safety Engineering and Ergonomics

The Occupational Safety Engineering and Ergonomics specialization trains graduate students to improve workplace safety and human performance by applying modern engineering methods and ergonomic principles. Rooted in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering, the program emphasizes accident and injury prevention through engineering controls and human-system integration. Students learn to analyze physical hazards, design safer systems, and optimize interaction between people and their work environments. Coursework may include safety engineering methods, physical ergonomics, occupational safety management, human factors, and exposure science. Graduates are prepared for careers in industry, research, consulting, and governmental roles where reducing workplace injury and enhancing system safety are priorities.
