Overview

The Medicine-Geriatrics Pathway at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago, is a four-year combined training program designed for Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residents pursuing a career in geriatrics. Administered by the Division of Academic Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, the pathway provides mentorship and guidance from geriatrics faculty throughout both the residency and subsequent fellowship years. Trainees gain longitudinal clinical experience across diverse care settings, including assisted living facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and dedicated geriatric clinics, and this is described as the only program in the Chicagoland area combining academic and VA-based geriatric experience. The curriculum includes dedicated didactics, case presentations, and journal clubs, alongside structured scholarship opportunities in geriatrics-focused quality improvement and research projects. The program meets board certification requirements in both the primary specialty (IM or FM) and Geriatric Medicine upon completion. Graduates are prepared for varied career paths within geriatrics, including roles as Medical Director, consultant, Skilled Nursing Facility physician (SNFist), or primary care provider. The pathway reflects UIC's broader focus, through the Division of AIM, on training physicians to address the healthcare needs of aging and underserved populations. Applicants apply through ERAS under one of two dedicated NRMP codes depending on their base residency specialty.
