MD Psychiatry

The MD Psychiatry program at MVJ Medical College and Research Hospital (MVJMC&RH), Bangalore, is designed to develop skilled and compassionate psychiatrists with strong clinical competence and ethical practice. The department offers comprehensive training in general adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, substance use disorders, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and community mental health. Residents receive hands-on exposure through outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, emergency services, and multidisciplinary case discussions. The curriculum follows the competency-based postgraduate medical education framework prescribed by the National Medical Commission. Academic activities such as seminars, case conferences, journal clubs, psychotherapy training, and research methodology sessions are integral to the program. The attached teaching hospital provides exposure to a diverse patient population, enabling residents to manage a wide range of psychiatric conditions. Emphasis is also placed on thesis work, mental health legislation, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in clinical practice, academics, and public mental health services.

1. MBBS degree from an NMC-recognised medical college
2. Completion of compulsory rotating internship on or before the prescribed cutoff date
3. Permanent or provisional registration with NMC / State Medical Council
4. Qualified NEET-PG examination
5. Admission through centralised counselling (KEA / MCC)
